Abstract
Milk and dairy production is an important part of the livestock industry in Japan. According to statistics for 2022, national arable milk production was up to 3.18gl (gigalitres). This figure reflects a trend over the past few years. Milk is an essential food in the Japanese diet and a must-have on the Japanese dinner table. Milk production in the livestock industry is supported by the skills and efforts of farmers and dairy farmers. Japan’s livestock industry has faced various challenges in recent years, but efficiency improvements and technological innovation have improved productivity and ensured a stable supply of milk. On the other hand, Japan’s milk market is not only faced with domestic demand, but also competition from imports. This has forced domestic producers to work on improving quality and reducing costs in order to remain competitive. Milk consumption patterns are also changing. In response to growing health consciousness and diversifying consumer needs, new products such as low-fat and organic milk are appearing on the market. These products are driving the growth of the milk dairy market. Overall, milk and dairy product production in Japan continues to grow steadily. Thanks to producers’ efforts and technological innovation, quality has improved and demand has been met. Looking to the future, key challenges will be developing a sustainable livestock industry and adapting it to consumer needs.
Milk Dairy production (milk) production volume
Milk and dairy production in Japan has changed over the past few decades. Looking at data from 1985 to 2022, production peaked in 1994 at 4.34gl, but current production has settled at 73.3% of that peak. This is thought to be due to structural changes in agriculture and changes in consumer preferences. Over the past few decades, Japanese agriculture has undergone major transformation. Economic globalization and changes in agricultural policies have altered the production environment and the economic situation of farmers. As a result, milk production has also been affected, with production volumes declining from their peak. Additionally, consumers’ health consciousness and diversifying food culture are also influencing the trend. While demand for dairy products is declining, demand for alternatives and healthier products is increasing. These factors have contributed to the decline in milk production. While declining milk production poses challenges for the livestock industry, it could also provide new business opportunities and spur efforts to improve production efficiency. Building sustainable agricultural systems and developing products that meet consumer needs will be key to the future of milk and dairy production.

Hokkaido plays a central role in milk production in Japan’s agriculture. Looking at data from 1985 to 2022, Hokkaido’s milk production peaked in 2022, reaching 480ml. This indicates that Hokkaido is the major milk producing region in Japan. While milk production in Hokkaido has peaked, production in other regions is on the decline. This is thought to be due to Hokkaido’s vast farmland and proactive agricultural policies. Hokkaido’s climate conditions and fertility of the soil also provide an ideal environment for milk production. Hokkaido is set to maintain a high level of production even after 2022, when milk production peaked. This is due to the hard work and innovation of local farmers and cattle breeders, and demonstrates the sustainability of Hokkaido’s milk industry. On the other hand, various factors are affecting milk production in Hokkaido, including changes in milk demand and consumption patterns, and domestic and international competition. Taking these factors into account, Hokkaido farmers and the government are considering measures to support the development and sustainability of agriculture in the region.

The statistics on milk production in Japan in 2022 are interesting. The fact that Hokkaido is the largest overall producer indicates that Hokkaido is the center of Japan’s milk industry. Hokkaido’s production volume is 480ml, and the overall average production volume is 90.6ml. This suggests that Hokkaido has an overwhelmingly larger production volume than other regions. In addition, milk production in 2022 will be 2.99gl, indicating that supply to Japan’s overall milk demand will be relatively stable. This demonstrates the efforts of Japanese farmers and cattle breeders to maintain production. However, milk production is subject to seasonal fluctuations. Weather conditions, such as heat in summer and cold in winter, can affect production. Changes in demand and economic factors can also affect production. Overall, the 2022 statistics show that Hokkaido remains the leading milk producing region and that milk production in Japan remains relatively stable. This suggests that Japan’s milk industry plays an important role in the local economy.
