Agricultural company of vegetable production, cultivating area volume in Japan

Management

Abstract

We provide an overview of the latest trends in managed cultivated land area and leased land in agriculture, based on 2022 data. The largest area of cultivated land for agricultural crops is 30.0 ha or more, indicating that agricultural management is becoming larger in scale. In particular, the use of ordinary fields and leased land is noticeable, and there is a demand for more efficient management and optimal use of resources. In addition, the total area of land used for cultivating greenhouse vegetables is also increasing, highlighting the importance of agricultural diversification and high added-value crops. These trends are influenced by technological innovation and agricultural policies, and while the transition to sustainable agricultural management is progressing, issues regarding land use efficiency and resource management are also being discussed at the same time. In the future, there will be a demand for further improvements in productivity and reductions in environmental impact.

Cultivated land area

Looking at recent trends in agricultural land area under management, there has been a notable increase in the use of particularly large amounts of farmland from 2019 to 2022. In 2020, over 30.0 ha was devoted to vegetable planting, reaching a total area of 5.14 ka, which was the peak. However, the proportion of this large-scale farmland has decreased slightly in recent years, and is currently at 90.4% of its peak level. There are several factors behind this trend. First, advances in agricultural technology have made it possible to manage agricultural operations more efficiently, making it easier to manage and operate large-scale farms. Additionally, changes in market demand and increased added value of agricultural products are also contributing to the increase in large-scale farmland. For example, it is believed that increased demand for greenhouse vegetables is leading to an increase in their cultivation in large-scale facilities. On the other hand, there are also challenges associated with increasing large-scale farmland. As the agricultural structure in the region becomes larger, there are concerns about the impact on small-scale farmers and local communities, and there is also the impact on the ecosystem if land use diversification does not progress. In the future, from the perspective of sustainable agricultural management, efficient management of large-scale farmland and appropriate use of resources will be required. In addition, promoting flexible farmland use that is suited to local characteristics and demand will also help increase the sustainability of agriculture.

Ordinary field

As of 2022, the total area of ordinary farmland dedicated to vegetables is 9.11 ka, with an average size of 1.3 ka per farm. The peak area recorded is 3.62 ka for farms with over 30.0 hectares of vegetables. This indicates that while large-scale vegetable farms represent a significant portion of the total area, the majority of vegetable cultivation occurs on smaller farms. The data suggests a trend towards diverse farm sizes, with substantial contributions from both large and small-scale operations in the vegetable sector.

Borrowed land

As of 2022, the maximum area of rented land used for vegetable cultivation is 4.08 ka, representing the highest recorded value for plots exceeding 30.0 hectares. This peak indicates a significant reliance on rented land for large-scale vegetable farming. Trends suggest an increasing trend towards utilizing leased land for extensive vegetable production, likely driven by factors such as land availability and economic considerations. This shift highlights the growing importance of rental agreements in supporting large-scale agricultural operations.

Total area cultivated under greenhouses for vegetables

Based on the latest data on the total area of greenhouse vegetable cultivation, we will consider the current state and characteristics of agriculture. The total cultivated area of greenhouse vegetables in 2022 is 117,000 m^2, of which the maximum area reaches 40,600 m^2, with more than 30.0 ha of vegetables. The average area is 16,700 m^2, which reflects the diversity of greenhouse vegetables. Greenhouse vegetables are generally grown in greenhouses or vinyl greenhouses, which allows them to be produced beyond the constraints of climate and season. In particular, large-scale greenhouse vegetable cultivation makes use of advanced management techniques and automated systems to ensure stable productivity and quality. For example, it is possible to control watering and temperature and effectively manage pests and diseases. The use of greenhouse vegetables also responds to changes in market demand, and is expected to lead to the supply of high added-value crops and consistent quality. This is expected to contribute to the local economy and create jobs. In addition, greenhouse vegetable cultivation in urban suburbs and specific regions contributes to a stable food supply and improved local self-sufficiency. However, greenhouse vegetable cultivation presents challenges in terms of energy consumption and efficient use of resources. In particular, there is a need to develop cultivation techniques that take sustainability into account and introduce renewable energy sources. Additionally, the costs of setting up and maintaining the facilities must be taken into account. In the future, technological innovation and improved environmental friendliness will be essential factors for the growth of greenhouse vegetables. With the aim of achieving both advanced agriculture and sustainability, greenhouse vegetable cultivation will continue to play an important role in the future.
