Abstract
China is the largest market for seafood imports in global agriculture in 2021. Looking at past trends, demand for seafood is increasing worldwide, with China’s growing demand being one of the main factors. This is due to the increase in seafood consumption due to China’s economic growth and population growth. In addition, demand for seafood is also increasing in Asian countries other than China, as well as in Europe and North America, and these regions also play an important role as import markets. As seafood imports increase, the importance of sustainable fishing and aquaculture is becoming increasingly important, and countries are working to manage fisheries resources and improve aquaculture technologies. As the global seafood market is expected to continue to grow, ensuring sustainability and supply stability is becoming a key issue.
Seafood imports (worldwide)
Between 1961 and 2021, global seafood imports have increased significantly. China achieved a record import volume of 15 Mt in 2019 and has maintained a high level since then. China’s imports, 100% compared to the peak, indicate its significant growth. This trend reflects the rapid expansion of demand for seafood due to China’s economic growth and population growth. In addition, seafood imports are increasing in Asian countries other than China, as well as in Europe and North America, and there is a rise in global demand. This trend is likely due to changes in global food demand and diversification of nutritional intake. In addition, the importance of sustainable fishing and aquaculture has been emphasized, and countries are strengthening these efforts. Seafood imports are expected to continue to increase in the future, but sustainable resource management and improvements in the supply chain are necessary.

Seafood imports (latest year, countries around the world)
China is the largest market for agricultural seafood imports in the world in 2021. China’s high import volume of 15Mt accounts for the largest share of the total, with an average of 369kt and a total of 67.9Mt. A feature visible from this data is that China plays a major role in the global seafood market. As China’s economy grows, demand for seafood is expanding, which has led to an increase in imports. In addition, seafood imports are also active in regions other than China, suggesting that global demand is increasing. This is likely due to changes in global eating habits and increased nutritional awareness. In addition, the importance of sustainable fishing and aquaculture is increasing, and these efforts are contributing to the stability and sustainability of the global seafood market. As demand is expected to continue to expand, improving resource management and supply chains has become an important issue.

Seafood imports (continent)
Asia will boast a record high of 30.4 Mt in imports of agricultural seafood in world agriculture in 2021. This is the highest value ever recorded, surpassing past data, indicating that the Asian region is playing an increasingly important role in the global seafood market. This rapid increase reflects the growing demand for seafood along with economic growth in Asian countries. The Asian region is densely populated, and the demand for seafood is increasing as dietary habits change. In addition, efforts for sustainable fishing and aquaculture have been strengthened, making these regions increasingly important as import markets. Meanwhile, seafood imports are also increasing in other regions, indicating an expansion of global demand. This trend is likely due to changes in global food demand, growing nutritional awareness, and the internationalization of food culture. The global seafood market, including the Asian region, is expected to continue to grow, but sustainable resource management and improvements in the supply chain are necessary.

Seafood imports (latest year, continent)
In 2021, Asia was the largest importer of agricultural seafood in global agriculture, with an astounding figure of 30.4 Mt. This figure suggests that the Asian region is playing an increasingly important role in the global seafood market. Demand for seafood is rapidly increasing in Asia due to economic growth and population growth. Asian countries are engaged in aquaculture and fishing, taking advantage of their abundant marine resources, and these efforts are contributing to the increase in imports. Meanwhile, seafood imports are also increasing in other regions, suggesting an expansion of global demand. This is likely due to changes in the world’s diet, growing nutritional awareness, and the internationalization of food culture. The importance of sustainable fishing and aquaculture is also increasing, and countries are investing in these areas. The global seafood market, including in Asia, is expected to continue to grow, but improvements in resource management and supply chains are essential.
