China Overtakes U.S. as Top Lettuce Producer with 15 Million Tons

Total

Abstract

Lettuce production has seen significant growth over recent decades, driven by increasing demand for fresh produce globally. Historically, the United States was a dominant producer, but in recent years, China has emerged as the world’s largest lettuce producer, accounting for around 15 million metric tons (Mt) in 2022. This shift reflects China’s growing role in global agriculture, supported by vast agricultural land and favorable climates. The U.S. remains a key player, especially in exports, with major production hubs in California and Arizona. Lettuce is primarily grown for fresh consumption, with varieties like iceberg and romaine dominating global markets. Advances in cultivation techniques, such as hydroponics, have also played a role in expanding production.

Lettuce production (Worldwide)

Lettuce production has experienced significant growth from 1961 to 2022, with China leading the global market. China’s lettuce production peaked in 2020 at 15.1 million metric tons (Mt), making it the largest producer globally. Currently, China produces 99.1% of its peak level, highlighting its sustained dominance. Historically, the U.S. was a major producer, but China’s rapid expansion, fueled by large-scale agriculture and increasing domestic demand, shifted the balance. Global trends show rising lettuce consumption due to health-conscious diets and innovations in farming, such as hydroponics. China’s dominance illustrates its growing influence on global agriculture over recent decades.

Lettuce production (latest year, worldwide)

In 2022, global lettuce production reached 27.1 million metric tons (Mt), with China as the largest producer at 15 Mt, contributing over half of the total. The global average production stood at 249,000 tons (kt), underscoring the wide disparity in production across regions. China’s dominance reflects its vast agricultural capacity and rising domestic demand for fresh produce. Globally, lettuce production has expanded due to increasing consumption driven by health trends and innovations like hydroponics and greenhouse farming. Other key producers include the U.S. and Spain, though their output is far below China’s. Global production is expected to remain steady, with sustainable practices gaining traction.

Lettuce production (continent)

In 2022, Asia led global lettuce production with a total of 18.2 million metric tons (Mt), making it the highest-producing region. This dominance is primarily driven by China, which alone accounts for 15 Mt, highlighting Asia’s agricultural capacity. The region’s growth reflects rising demand for fresh vegetables, driven by population growth and increasing health consciousness. Global trends show expanding lettuce production, supported by technological advances like hydroponics and greenhouse cultivation. While Asia dominates, other regions, such as North America and Europe, remain important producers, with a focus on export markets and specialty varieties. Global demand for lettuce continues to rise, favoring regions with efficient production systems.

Lettuce production (latest year, continent)

In 2022, global lettuce production reached 27.1 million metric tons (Mt), with Asia contributing the largest share at 18.2 Mt. This highlights Asia’s dominance in lettuce production, driven primarily by China. The global average production was 4.52 Mt, reflecting the wide variation in production capacity across regions. Asia’s large-scale output is fueled by high domestic demand and favorable growing conditions. Global trends in lettuce production show a steady rise, with increasing health-conscious diets and the adoption of advanced cultivation techniques like hydroponics and vertical farming. While Asia leads, regions like North America and Europe focus on high-value exports and specialized varieties.
