There are diverse characteristics in the planted area and production volume of fields by prefecture in Japan. In general, rice and vegetable production is thriving in the Hokkaido and Hokuriku regions, where production tends to be relatively high. On the other hand, in urban and mountainous areas, farmlands are shrinking and aging, and the planted area and production volume tend to decrease. In regions that focus on specialty products and organic farming, production is increasing accordingly. Differences in climate, soil conditions, and agricultural policies in different regions have influenced the formation of these characteristics.
