The total cultivated area of rice paddies in Japan varies greatly depending on the region. Many of the individual farms are small-scale and have limited area, but in areas with large-scale farms, extensive rice paddies can be seen. Major rice-producing areas, such as the Tohoku region and Niigata Prefecture, are home to a concentration of vast paddy fields where high-yielding varieties are cultivated. On the other hand, the area of paddy fields in urban areas is on the decline, and land use is becoming more diverse. There is a demand for efficient land use that makes use of the characteristics of each region.
