The number of people working in Japan’s agriculture industry is decreasing year by year, and the average age of farmers is aging, especially in individually managed farms. By region, there are relatively many workers in agriculturally-rich areas such as Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, but the majority of them are elderly. On the other hand, in suburban and mountainous areas, there is a noticeable outflow of young people and a decrease in the number of people entering agriculture. In order to resolve the agricultural labor shortage, it is important to provide support measures tailored to the characteristics of each region and to secure new farmers.
