Profits in Japanese agriculture vary greatly depending on the region and the characteristics of individual operations. For example, Hokkaido has a large-scale mechanization, which allows for efficient production and tends to result in higher profits. Meanwhile, suburban agriculture is thriving in the Kanto region, and farmers are pursuing high added value by utilizing direct sales outlets and tourist farms. In individual farming, a farmer’s management skills and marketing ability are directly linked to profits, and an increasing number of farmers are earning stable incomes through the production of high-quality branded vegetables and contract farming.
