In Japanese agricultural fruit farming, there is diversity in the crops cultivated and management styles from region to region. In Hokkaido, apples and grapes are the main crops and there are many large-scale farms, while in the Tohoku region, such as Aomori and Yamagata prefectures, apples are particularly popular. In the Kansai region, citrus fruits are the focus, and there tends to be a large number of small to medium-sized family-run businesses. Taking advantage of the Kyushu region’s warm climate, citrus fruit production is thriving, and many farmers supply the region’s specialty products to the market. These regional characteristics require different approaches to fruit farming management and marketing strategies.
