The cultivated area in Japanese agriculture has different characteristics depending on the region. Hokkaido has many large-scale farms that utilize vast tracts of land, with potatoes and corn being the main crops. In the Tohoku region, rice cultivation using paddy fields is the norm, and individual farming is the norm. Suburban agriculture is thriving in the Kanto region, where a wide variety of vegetables and fruits are grown. The cultivation of highland vegetables is well developed in the Chubu region, while in the Kyushu region, a wide variety of vegetables are grown taking advantage of the warm climate.
