Livestock statistics on beef cattle in Japan include data on the number of cattle kept, the ratio of breeding cattle to fattening cattle, rearing conditions by region, production volumes, and consumption volumes. For example, breeding cows produce calves and feedlot cattle are raised for meat. By region, Hokkaido is the largest producer, followed by the Kyushu region as an important production base. Additionally, Wagyu beef is popular both domestically and internationally for its high quality, and is also characterized by its high price. Statistical data is published regularly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
