One characteristic of Japanese agriculture, when looking at price data on agricultural production materials, is its high reliance on imports. Many chemical fertilizers, feed, pesticides, etc. are imported and are affected by price fluctuations in the international market and exchange rates. Material prices have been on the rise in recent years, and the rise in energy prices in particular has a direct impact on production costs. Decreasing domestic production and supply shortages are also factors contributing to higher prices. Measures being taken include government subsidies and the promotion of efficient material use.
