The main data in Japan’s annual milk and dairy product statistics include raw milk production, consumption, dairy product imports and exports, and price trends. A notable feature of Hokkaido is that it accounts for roughly half of the raw milk production, with most of the domestic consumption going towards drinking milk and yogurt. In addition, demand for dairy products such as butter and cheese is on the rise, leading to a dependency on imports in addition to domestic production. Since production volume fluctuates depending on the season and weather, maintaining a supply and demand balance is a challenge.
