Abstract
There are some interesting trends regarding cut alstroemeria in Japanese agriculture. According to data from 2022, the national shipment of alstroemeria reached a maximum of 56.8 million plants, with a planting area of 80.5 hectares. This indicates that alstroemeria occupies an important position in the Japanese cut flower market. Based on data from the past few years, it is likely that production and acreage are increasing in response to rising demand. Alstroemerias are used in a wide range of applications, including bouquets and decorations, due to their beautiful petals and long-lasting flowers. This makes it a popular crop for growers and farmers. Another characteristic is that the quality and characteristics vary depending on the production area, as cultivation techniques and climatic conditions differ from region to region. It is highly likely that the cultivation area and shipping volume of alstroemeria will continue to expand in the future due to increasing demand and technological advances.
Alstroemeria shipping volume (main data).
Looking back at the data on Japan’s alstroemeria shipments, we can see fluctuations from 1999 to 2022. Particularly noteworthy is the peak of 76 million bottles recorded nationwide in 2001. Shipments have since declined and are now at 74.7% of their peak. Several factors are thought to be behind this decline, including competition from imported cut flowers, changes in demand, and changes in farmers’ business environment. In addition, cultivating alstroemeria requires skill and management, and challenges in these areas may also be having an impact. On the other hand, it is possible that the types of flowers cultivated are also changing in response to changes in demand and market trends. Considering past trends, it will likely be necessary to continue to introduce efficient cultivation techniques and sales strategies while responding to changes in demand and the competitive environment.

In 2022, the latest year in which cut flowers were shipped, Nagano Prefecture recorded the highest volume of cut flowers shipped overall, at 21.4 million flowers. This is a notable feature and suggests that Nagano Prefecture is a major region for cut flower production. Nagano Prefecture’s excellent climatic conditions, abundant farmland, and advanced farming techniques may have made the region a major producer of cut flowers. Another factor may be that Nagano Prefecture has a more developed horticulture and agricultural infrastructure than other regions. On the other hand, cut flower production in other prefectures should also be noted, as there is diversity in the types of flowers cultivated and the production volume from region to region. Effective production strategies and marketing are required, taking into account the characteristics and competitive conditions of each region. In the future, cut flower production will need to make the most of the characteristics of each region, while also paying attention to changes in demand and the effects of climatic conditions.

Alstroemeria cultivation area (main data).
The area of alstroemeria cultivated in Japanese agriculture is expected to fluctuate from 1999 to 2022. A particularly notable feature is the peak of 119ha recorded nationwide in 2001. Since then, the area under cultivation has decreased and is currently at 67.6% of its peak. Possible reasons for this decline include changes in demand, changes in farmers’ business environment, and competition from other competing crops. In addition, cultivating alstroemeria requires skill and management, and challenges in these areas may also be having an impact. Additionally, the impact of imported cut flowers may also contribute to the variation in planted area. Depending on the changing demand and market needs, farmers and producers tend to change their crop choices. Given these trends, it will be necessary to introduce efficient cultivation techniques and sales strategies in response to changes in demand trends and the competitive environment.

In 2022, the latest data available, Nagano Prefecture recorded the largest area of cut flowers cultivated in Japan, at 25.9 hectares. This is a notable feature and suggests that Nagano Prefecture is a major region for cut flower production. Nagano Prefecture’s excellent climatic conditions, farmland, and advanced farming techniques may have made the region a major producer of cut flowers. Another factor may be that Nagano Prefecture has a more developed horticulture and agricultural infrastructure than other regions. On the other hand, the area of cut flowers cultivated in other prefectures should also be noted, as there is diversity in the types of flowers cultivated and the production volume from region to region.
