Abstract
In Japan, potted plant agriculture has seen a steady increase in both shipping volumes and harvested areas. In 2022, the shipment volume reached 181 million pots, the highest on record, reflecting strong consumer demand for ornamental plants and home gardening. Similarly, the harvested area expanded to 145,000 hectares, the largest ever recorded, highlighting the growing significance of potted plant cultivation in Japanese agriculture.
Past trends show that potted plants, particularly flowers and decorative greenery, have become popular in both urban and rural settings. The rise in environmental awareness and indoor gardening, driven by lifestyle changes, has boosted demand. Additionally, advancements in cultivation techniques, such as optimized greenhouse farming and regional specialization, have contributed to increased productivity and expanded harvest areas.
Shipping volume of potted plants (main data).
The shipping volume of potted plants in Japan has experienced significant fluctuations from 1977 to 2022. The peak was recorded in 2004, with 324 million pots shipped nationwide. However, as of 2022, shipment volume has declined to 55.9% of its peak, reflecting changes in consumer preferences and market conditions.
Several factors contribute to this trend. The aging population and shrinking household sizes have reduced demand for decorative plants. Additionally, lifestyle changes and the increasing popularity of alternative leisure activities have impacted plant sales. Despite the decline, potted plants remain a staple in Japanese agriculture, with a focus on quality and niche markets such as rare ornamental varieties and environmentally friendly options. Producers are adapting to evolving consumer preferences by incorporating sustainable cultivation practices and catering to a growing interest in home gardening.

Shipping volume of potted plants (by prefecture).
In 2022, Iwate Prefecture led Japan in potted plant shipments with 1.51 million pots, marking its significance in the industry. This reflects a trend of regional specialization, where prefectures with suitable climates and infrastructure have become key production centers for specific types of plants. Iwate’s strength lies in its favorable growing conditions and access to efficient distribution networks.
Nationwide, however, potted plant shipments have seen a gradual decline since the 2004 peak, influenced by shifting consumer habits, demographic changes, and increased competition from imports. Despite the overall decrease, there is a growing focus on premium, ornamental plants and sustainable production methods to meet consumer demands for eco-friendly gardening. This trend shows how regions like Iwate are adapting to changing market dynamics while maintaining a strong foothold in Japan’s potted plant industry.

Harvested area of potted plants (main data).
The harvested area for potted plants in Japan has seen significant shifts from 1977 to 2022. The peak was reached in 2004 with 220,000 hectares nationwide, but by 2022, this area had decreased to 66.2% of its peak, reflecting broader changes in the agricultural and consumer landscape.
Several factors contribute to this reduction. Aging farmers, a shrinking rural workforce, and increased urbanization have reduced the available land for cultivation. Additionally, changing consumer preferences and competition from imported plants have further impacted the industry. Despite this, there has been a growing emphasis on efficient land use, with producers focusing on high-value crops and more sustainable practices, including greenhouse cultivation and environmentally conscious farming. These trends suggest a shift toward quality over quantity in Japan’s potted plant agriculture.

Harvested area of potted plants (by prefecture).
The harvested area of potted crops in Japanese agriculture is recorded by prefecture with the latest data for 2022. According to this data, Okinawa Prefecture has the highest total, harvesting 3.23 ka. The reason why Okinawa Prefecture has the largest number of islands may be due to its warm climate and unique land conditions. It is also possible that there is high demand for flowers and plants that are rooted in Okinawa’s tourist destinations and local culture. Meanwhile, in other regions, the harvested area tends to be relatively small. In urban and other densely populated areas, the production area for potted plants may be limited due to a lack of farmland and the advancement of urbanization. Additionally, production volumes may vary depending on climatic conditions and regional characteristics. Furthermore, because the demand and popularity of potted plants varies from region to region, harvesting areas tend to be adjusted to meet that demand. In tourist destinations and areas with many events, flowers and plants are displayed according to the season, and demand for potted plants is expected to increase accordingly. Generally speaking, the harvest area of potted plants in Japanese agriculture varies from region to region and fluctuates according to local characteristics and demand. Farmers and related businesses are able to carry out effective production activities by understanding local demand and market trends and developing appropriate cultivation and sales strategies.
