The production of potted plants, especially ornamental plants, in Japanese agriculture has grown steadily in recent years. According to data for 2022, shipments of ornamental plants nationwide reached 40.8 million pots, a record high. Similarly, the harvest area for 2022 is also set to be 25.7ka, which is also the largest on record. This trend is thought to be due to changes in lifestyles in urban areas and the increasing importance of potted plants as part of interior design and living spaces. Another factor is that technological advances and the development of a wide variety of varieties have improved the production efficiency of potted plants. As demand is expected to continue to grow, it will be important for producers to continue making efforts to improve quality and diversity.
