Abstract
Japan’s cut flower industry has shown steady growth in recent years. According to data for 2022, nationwide cut flower shipments will reach 1.23 billion flowers, the highest level ever. In addition, the cultivated area was 4,090 hectares, which is also the largest ever. This growth is driven by technological innovation, agricultural diversification and increasing demand. In particular, production volumes are increasing due to the expansion of flower-growing areas and improved productivity. Furthermore, Japanese flowers are popular not only in Japan but also in overseas markets, and exports are also on the rise. On the other hand, challenges such as climate change and labor shortages still exist, and there is a need to build a sustainable production system. Thus, although Japan’s cut flower industry is on a growth trend, further technological innovation and the promotion of sustainable agriculture are needed.
Chrysanthemum shipping volume (main data).
The shipping volume of chrysanthemums in Japan’s cut flower industry has been fluctuating for a long time. Looking at data from 1976 to 2022, the national figure peaked at 2.08 billion in 1996, but has been declining since then, currently falling to 59% of its peak level. Possible reasons for this decline include an increase in imported flowers, changes in demand, and a decrease in farmland due to urbanization. On the other hand, in recent years, there has been a trend toward improved productivity in certain regions due to improved cultivation techniques and varieties. In some regions, cut flower cultivation is emphasized as a part of tourism and regional development, and in some cases regional branding is promoted. As such, chrysanthemum shipping volumes have declined since their previous peak, but each region has different characteristics and approaches, and it is clear that there are a variety of factors behind this.

Chrysanthemum shipping volume (by prefecture).
Aichi Prefecture recorded the highest total shipment of cut flowers in Japanese agriculture in 2022, reaching 438 million flowers. This figure is the highest ever and indicates healthy growth in the cut flower industry. Aichi Prefecture tops the list in part because the prefecture has a warm climate and abundant agricultural technology, making it well suited to flower production. Another characteristic is that demand for cut flowers is also increasing in other regions, and production areas are diversifying. Furthermore, in recent years, technological innovation and efficiency improvements in floriculture have contributed to increased production. On the other hand, challenges such as changes in demand and climate change still exist, calling for the creation of sustainable production systems. As such, although characteristics differ from region to region, Japan’s cut flower industry is on a growth trend overall.

Area of chrysanthemum cultivation (main data).
The area of land cultivated with chrysanthemums in Japanese agriculture has been fluctuating over the long term. Looking at data from 1976 to 2022, the country recorded its highest land area of 6.28 thousand hectares in 1999, but has been on a downward trend since then, and is currently at 65.2% of its peak. The decline is likely due to changes in demand, the impact of economic conditions, and the diversification of agriculture. In particular, this may be due to the decrease in land suitable for growing cut flowers as urbanization and agricultural sophistication progresses. On the other hand, chrysanthemum cultivation is thriving in some areas and contributes to the local economy. Furthermore, in recent years, awareness of the environment and sustainability has increased, and new initiatives such as organic farming and the promotion of regional brands are being seen. As such, the area of land planted to chrysanthemums has been decreasing from its past peak. However, as production systems are being shifted to meet regional and market needs, it is important to explore cultivation methods and management strategies that take into account the sustainability of agriculture.

Area cultivated with chrysanthemums (by prefecture).
In 2022, Aichi Prefecture recorded the largest area of land used for cut flowers in Japanese agriculture, at 1,280 hectares. This figure is the highest ever and indicates the growth of the cut flower industry. Aichi Prefecture takes the top spot in part because the prefecture has a warm climate and advanced agricultural techniques that make it well suited to growing flowers. Cut flower cultivation is also thriving in other regions, where demand is expanding and production techniques are improving. In particular, cut flower cultivation has attracted attention as a means of promoting tourism and regional development, and there is a trend toward regional branding. On the other hand, challenges such as a decrease in farmland and labor shortages due to the diversification of agriculture and the progress of urbanization still exist. Addressing these challenges requires technological innovation and the promotion of efficient agricultural management. Although the characteristics of Japan’s cut flower industry vary from region to region, the industry as a whole is on a growth trend, and efforts toward sustainable development are important.
