Abstract
Focusing on statice, one of the cut flowers used in Japanese agriculture, nationwide shipments in 2022 reached 116 million plants. The total cultivated area nationwide in the same year was 166 hectares. The trends and characteristics visible in these figures first indicate that shipment volumes are very large and there is demand. On the other hand, the shipping volume is very large compared to the cultivated area, which indicates high production efficiency. These figures also suggest that there is a high demand for statice and that supply is outpacing demand. As it is a high demand sector, producers may be expanding cultivation to meet demand. Furthermore, since the shipping volume is greater than the cultivated area, this reflects the efficiency of the producers’ skills and cultivation methods. In this way, statice agriculture can be said to be characterized by a good balance between supply and demand, as well as high levels of skill and efficiency among producers.
