Abstract
Carnations, one of the cut flowers used in Japanese agriculture, are expected to reach a maximum of 192 million flowers shipped nationwide in 2022, and the cultivated area is also the largest in the country, occupying 237 hectares. This suggests that carnations still occupy an important position in the Japanese flower market. Carnations, with their beautiful petals and long-lasting flowers, are widely used as gifts and event decorations. In addition, since the domestic production volume in Japan is high, it is possible that it is not only used to meet domestic demand but also for export overseas. On the other hand, while the trend of increasing production volume and area under cultivation continues, challenges also exist for producers due to fluctuations in demand and market prices. Given this situation, carnation cultivation plays an important role in Japanese agriculture, and it will be necessary to continue to build a sustainable production system that responds to changes in demand and technological innovation.
Carnation shipping volume (main data).
Carnation shipments in Japanese agriculture have fluctuated between 1976 and 2022. At its peak in 1990, the number of cigarettes sold nationwide was recorded at 694 million, but today that figure has fallen to just 27.6% of that peak. This downward trend can be attributed to a variety of factors, including import competition, changes in demand and rising production costs. On the other hand, carnations still occupy an important position in Japan’s flower market and are widely used as gifts and event decorations. In particular, due to its characteristics such as high quality and long shelf life, demand for it both domestically and overseas has remained constant. In the future, producers and the industry as a whole will be required to build sustainable production systems while responding to changes in demand and fluctuations in the market environment.

Carnation shipping volume (by prefecture).
According to data from 2022, Nagano recorded the highest volume of cut flower shipments in Japan’s agriculture by prefecture, at 41.9 million flowers, which is currently the highest level. This data shows that Nagano Prefecture is a national leader in cut flower production. The increase in shipping volume from Nagano Prefecture is due to favorable climatic conditions and the large amount of land. It is also possible that regional specialization and technological advances have led to improved production efficiency. On the other hand, the shipping volumes from other prefectures are also an important factor to consider, with each region working on its own unique flower production. While responding to changes in the market environment, such as shifts in demand and intensifying competition, farmers and industry participants in each region are required to strengthen technological innovation and marketing strategies and strive to develop sustainable agriculture.

Carnation planted area (main data).
The area of carnation cultivation in Japanese agriculture fluctuates between 1976 and 2022. At its peak, 616 hectares were recorded nationwide in 1990, but it has now fallen to 38.5% of its peak size. This declining trend can be attributed to a variety of factors, including changes in demand, increased competition, and rising production costs. Additionally, because carnation cultivation is time-consuming and labor-intensive, factors such as a decrease in producers and conversion of farmland may also be contributing to the decline. However, carnations remain a popular flower, especially as gifts and for decorating events. In the future, producers and the industry as a whole will be required to build sustainable production systems while responding to changes in demand and fluctuations in the market environment.

Carnation cultivation area (by prefecture).
According to data from 2022, Nagano recorded the largest area of land used to grow cut flowers in Japanese agriculture among all prefectures, at 68.4 hectares, which is currently the largest amount. This data shows that Nagano Prefecture is a national leader in cut flower cultivation. The increase in cultivated area in Nagano Prefecture can be attributed to suitable climatic conditions and the large amount of land. It is also possible that regional specialization and technological advances have led to improved production efficiency. On the other hand, the cultivated area in other prefectures is also an important factor to consider, with each region working on its own unique cut flower production. While responding to changes in the market environment, such as shifts in demand and intensifying competition, farmers and industry participants in each region are required to strengthen technological innovation and marketing strategies and strive to develop sustainable agriculture.
