Vegetables

Vegetable production and planted area in Japanese agriculture are characterized by different characteristics in each prefecture. In general, northern regions such as Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures produce vegetables suited to the cooler climate, such as root crops and cabbage. On the other hand, in southern areas such as Kyushu and Okinawa, vegetables suited to warm climates, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, are mainly grown. In recent years, the production of greenhouse and institutional vegetables has been increasing, and vegetable production in areas close to urban areas is also attracting attention. In addition, changes in agricultural policy and demand in each region have resulted in fluctuations in planted area and production.
