Abstract
Grain production across the United States continued to play an important role in 2022. Corn has an overwhelming production volume of 349 million tons (Mt), making it the largest producer of agricultural products in the United States. This has made the United States a highly influential country in the world grain market. Corn production is primarily used for both food and animal feed, and export is also an important source of income.
Production(production (production volume))
In terms of U.S. grain production, corn recorded its highest production volume between 1961 and 2022 in 2016, reaching 412 Mt. However, production volume in 2022 will remain at 84.6% of its peak, showing a downward trend. In the past, ethanol production was driven by demand for ethanol and its use in animal feed, but in recent years, production volumes have fluctuated due to climate change, changes in land use, and agricultural policies. In contrast, soybean and wheat production has remained stable, balancing export and domestic consumption needs. Overall, grain production remains central to American agriculture, although production volumes are somewhat lower than at past peaks.

Production (food)
Grain food production in the United States has fluctuated between 1961 and 2021. In particular, wheat production peaked at 29.6 Mt in 2021 and has maintained stable production since then. Wheat is primarily used for domestic consumption and export, and is used in staple foods such as bread and pasta. Wheat production remains at 100% compared to peak levels, meeting the increasing demand. A notable feature of the past is the increasing diversification of food production, with the production of other crops such as corn and soybeans also playing an important role. Wheat continues to play a vital role in American food production despite climate and market fluctuations.

Import and export (exports)
Based on data from 1961, the maximum amount of grain exports from the United States was corn, reaching 70.6 Mt, with an average of 13.2 Mt, totaling 106 Mt. In addition to meeting demand for animal feed and ethanol, corn plays an important role as a global food supply, with export volumes being particularly large. Based on past trends, the United States has maintained its position as the world’s leading supplier of grain exports, exerting a significant influence on the supply and demand balance in the international market. Especially since the 1970s, export volumes have been steadily increasing, with the main destinations being Asia and Latin America. Fluctuations in export volumes depend on climatic conditions and international trade policies, and recently trade with countries such as China and Mexico has become an important factor.

Animal (feed)
Corn plays a significant role in US grain production as an animal feed ingredient. Based on data from 1961, the production of corn for animal feed was a peak of 156 Mt, which remains at the peak today. In the United States, corn is widely used as livestock feed and supports the production of meat and dairy products. In the past, feed demand, not just food use, has had a major impact on grain production. In particular, with the expansion of the livestock industry and the efficient supply of feed, demand for corn has increased and now accounts for a large portion of domestic consumption. Additionally, demand for corn for animal feed remains steady, driven in part by ethanol production.
