Abstract
Kiwifruit cultivation in the United States has been on the rise in recent years. According to data for 2022, the total kiwifruit planting area in the United States has reached a maximum of 4.93 thousand acres. Historically, kiwifruit cultivation in the United States has been concentrated mainly in California, where farmers have focused on cultivating the fruit due to its favorable climatic conditions. In recent years, with increased consumption in the United States, the area planted has expanded and production has been strengthened to meet the demand of the domestic market. Kiwifruit cultivation is also expected to continue to grow in order to meet consumer demand for fruit variety.
Kiwi fruit planting area
The area planted to kiwifruit in the United States has been declining since peaking at 6.64 thousand acres in 1997. Data for 2022 shows the area is at 4.93 thousand acres, or 74.2% of its peak. The decline could be due to rising cultivation costs, the effects of climate change or changes in the market. California in particular is positioned as a major production area, and although its climatic conditions remain favorable for cultivation, profitability and increasing competition may be having an impact. Additionally, changes in consumer tastes and the popularity of other fruits have also had an impact. Overall, although the kiwifruit market in the United States is maturing, there is still a certain amount of demand, and depending on future market trends, the area planted may increase again.

Kiwifruit planted area (50 US states)
The area planted to kiwifruit in California peaked at 6.42 thousand acres in 1997 but has since declined. By 2022, it has fallen to 4.77 thousand acres, or 74.3% of its peak. This decline may be due to rising costs, increased market competition, and the effects of climate change. Although California’s climate is suitable for growing kiwifruit, rising profitability and land prices may have affected farmers’ willingness to grow it. Other factors that may be influencing this include changes in consumer tastes and market demand, as well as the emergence of new fruits. However, California remains a major producer of peanuts in the United States, and it is possible that planted acreage may increase again in the future due to market demand and improvements in cultivation techniques.

Kiwifruit planted area (latest year, 50 US states)
According to 2022 data, the total area planted to kiwifruit in the United States is 4.93 thousand acres, of which California accounts for the largest share at 4.77 thousand acres. This makes California a major producer of kiwifruit. Most kiwifruit is grown in California, due to the state’s climate, which is ideal for growing kiwifruit. Meanwhile, the overall average planted area was 224 acres, reflecting limited cultivation outside of California. Historically, the area planted to kiwifruit has fluctuated, peaking in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but has since shown a declining trend. This decline is likely due to rising costs, market changes and climate change. However, California continues to maintain high production levels, likely due to improvements in cultivation techniques and adjustments in response to market demand. It will be important to continue aiming for stable production while responding to climate change and market trends.
