Abstract
Pistachio production in the United States is concentrated in California. According to 2022 data, California produces 882 million pounds of pistachios annually, accounting for most of the nation’s production. The state’s climate is ideal for pistachio growing, with dry summers and mild winters supporting production. The area under pistachio cultivation is increasing year by year, especially in arid regions. The increase in production is due to growing domestic demand and expanding export markets, with a focus on sustainable agricultural practices. California’s pistachio industry will continue to grow as it works to improve quality and protect the environment.
Pistachio production
From 1996 to 2022, there is significant variation in U.S. pistachio production. California, in particular, is a major producer, recording 1.16 billion pounds of production in 2021, but has since declined to 76.4% of its peak. The decline is due to environmental factors such as climate change and water scarcity, with California’s dry climate especially affecting pistachio cultivation. Historical data shows that production volumes are subject to fluctuations in weather and advances in agricultural technology, sometimes fluctuating dramatically. In the future, the introduction of sustainable agricultural techniques and efficient management of water resources will be key to stabilizing production.

Pistachio production (latest year, 50 US states)
According to 2022 data, California leads the U.S. in pistachio production with 882 million pounds per year, with the overall average and total also at 882 million pounds. This means that California accounts for nearly all of America’s pistachio production. California’s climate is ideal for growing pistachios, which is why it is the most concentrated producer in the state. Compared to past data, production volumes have remained stable in recent years, providing a stable supply to meet demand. This is thought to be due to climatic conditions and improvements in agricultural technology, and California production will likely continue to play a major role.
