U.S. Avocado Production Reaches 156kt with California Leading

Crop (USA)

Abstract

U.S. avocado production has grown rapidly in recent years, with total cultivated avocado production reaching 156kt in 2022. This growth is driven primarily by the growing popularity of avocados worldwide and the expansion of growing areas, particularly in California, where the climatic conditions are more favorable. America’s avocado farms are improving yields through technological innovation and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. In addition, due to consumers becoming increasingly health conscious and food cultures becoming more diversified, avocados are now widely used in dishes, salads, and more. As demand is predicted to continue to increase, producers are expected to continue their efforts to improve quality and stabilize supply.

Avocado production

Between 2007 and 2022, U.S. avocado production shows a variable pattern. At its peak in 2009, total production reached 299kt, but is now at about half that amount, 156kt. This decline is due to several factors. One factor is the impact of climate change on agricultural crops, with fluctuations in precipitation and temperature especially in major producing areas such as California affecting production volumes. Furthermore, although productivity is improving thanks to advances in agricultural technology and efforts at sustainable agriculture, it is still unable to keep up with increasing demand. As avocados become more health conscious, their popularity is growing worldwide, but balancing market supply and demand is a challenge. Looking ahead, adopting sustainable agricultural practices and adapting to climate change will become even more important, and efforts are needed to stabilize avocado production in the United States.

Between 2007 and 2022, avocado production in California fluctuated. At its peak in 2009, production reached a record high of 275kt, but is now at around half that amount, about 138kt. Several factors contribute to this decline. Firstly, there are changes in climatic conditions. California’s warm climate is ideal for growing avocados, but fluctuating precipitation and extreme weather events affect production. Furthermore, although there have been efforts to increase yields through advances in agricultural technology, the current situation is that yields are still not able to fully meet the growing demand. Demand is also being boosted by rising health consciousness among consumers and the growing popularity of avocados globally. Going forward, adapting to climate change and promoting sustainable agricultural practices will be key issues for California’s avocado industry. Efforts are needed to improve productivity while taking into account the specific climatic conditions of the region.

Avocado production (latest year, 50 US states)

U.S. avocado production totaled 156kt, based on the latest 2022 data. Of this, California accounted for 138kt, or about 88.5% of the total. California is the leading avocado-producing region in the United States, with a warm climate and suitable soil conditions that support cultivation. Historically, avocado production has increased year by year, but there are also impacts from climate change and bad weather. For example, fluctuations in precipitation can affect crop yields. Additionally, demand is increasing due to consumers becoming more health conscious and the diverse uses of avocados, which is contributing to an increase in production. At the same time, advances in agricultural technology and the introduction of sustainable farming practices are helping to make production more efficient. Looking to the future, efforts will be required to adapt to climate change and to balance supply and demand. Sustainable water management and cropland conservation are key issues, especially in California.
