The global import and export of vegetables (leafy vegetables and fruits) has different characteristics depending on the region. The main exporting countries are China, Spain, the Netherlands and Mexico, and these countries export a wide variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and lettuce. Importing countries include the United States, Germany and Japan. As the export and import of vegetables is dependent on climatic conditions and the season, imports are commonly used to supplement out-of-season supplies. As consumers become more health conscious, the demand for organic and high-quality vegetables is increasing, which is also affecting trade volumes.
