Abstract
Global spinach production has seen notable growth over the years, with China consistently leading the world in output. As of 2022, China produced 30.7 million tons (Mt), accounting for a significant portion of global supply. Historically, spinach has been cultivated for both fresh consumption and as a processed product, with demand rising in line with global interest in healthy eating. Other major producers include the United States, particularly California, and countries like India and Turkey. The rise of organic farming and increased focus on leafy greens have further influenced production trends, with both large-scale industrial farms and smaller, local producers contributing to the market.
Spinach production (worldwide)
Spinach production has seen steady growth globally, with China consistently dominating the market. Since 1961, China’s production has risen significantly, peaking at 30.7 million tons (Mt) in 2022, which marks 100% of its peak output. Over the decades, spinach has become a key crop for both fresh and processed markets, driven by rising health-consciousness and demand for leafy greens. Other leading producers include India, the U.S., and Turkey. Global trends reflect increased production efficiency, particularly in large-scale farming, with a shift towards organic and sustainable cultivation methods in recent years.

Spinach production (latest year, world)
In 2022, global spinach production reached 33.1 million tons (Mt), with China leading at 30.7Mt, representing over 90% of total output. The average production volume globally stood at 487kt. Historically, China’s dominance in spinach cultivation has grown steadily, reflecting its large-scale farming capacity and domestic demand for leafy greens. Other major producers include India, the U.S., and Turkey. The global trend shows an increasing preference for fresh and processed spinach, driven by health-conscious consumers. There is also a notable shift towards more sustainable and organic farming practices.

Spinach production (continent)
In 2022, global spinach production reached a peak of 31.7 million tons (Mt), with Asia, particularly China, accounting for the majority of this output. As the leading producer, China has driven much of the global increase in spinach production, leveraging its vast agricultural infrastructure and domestic demand for leafy greens. The growing preference for healthy diets has boosted spinach consumption worldwide. Trends indicate a shift towards more sustainable farming practices, including organic cultivation, as well as an increasing focus on both fresh and processed spinach in global markets.

Spinach production (latest year, continent)
In 2022, global spinach production reached 33.1 million tons (Mt), with Asia leading at 31.7Mt, driven largely by China’s vast output. The average production globally was 5.52Mt. Over time, Asia’s dominance in spinach cultivation has grown, reflecting both the region’s large-scale agricultural practices and rising demand for nutritious leafy greens. The global trend shows increasing consumer preference for fresh and processed spinach, fueled by health-conscious eating habits. Additionally, there has been a shift toward sustainable and organic farming methods in many producing countries.

The maximum is 2.6Mt of Asia, the average is 1.11Mt, and the total is 6.66Mt
