Abstract
Global trends in land use for lettuce stand out, with China being the largest producer. According to 2022 data, China devotes 637kha of land area to lettuce cultivation, making it the top producer in the world. This advantage is supported by China’s vast land area and diverse climatic conditions. Meanwhile, in other countries, lettuce production is relatively small-scale and mainly occurs according to market demand. In some countries, such as Europe and North America, high-yield lettuce production is possible even in small areas by utilizing technologies such as greenhouse cultivation and hydroponics. In addition, sustainable agriculture efforts are spreading due to concerns about environmental impact and water use, and advances in agricultural technology are also affecting how lettuce is grown. Considering these factors, technological innovations and the adoption of sustainable production methods may have a significant impact on global land use for lettuce in the future.
Lettuce land use (Worldwide)
Looking at the trends in land use for lettuce over the past few decades, it is clear that China is its largest producer. Between 1961 and 2022, land use for lettuce in China grew rapidly, reaching 637kha in 2022. This rapid growth is likely to be due to the growing demand caused by China’s population growth and urbanization. Compared to the peak, land use for lettuce in China has reached 100%, which suggests challenges for sustainable production. In countries other than China, land use for lettuce has remained relatively stable, with production adjusted according to demand. In some countries, technological innovations and sustainable agriculture efforts have enabled more efficient production. In the future, the promotion of sustainable agriculture will be important to cope with rapid growth and expanding land use in countries like China.

Lettuce land use (latest year, worldwide)
Looking at the data on land use for lettuce in global agriculture, it is clear that China is the largest producer. According to data from 2022, land use for lettuce in China has reached 637kha, accounting for about half of the total. Meanwhile, the average for each country is 11.5kha, with a total of 1.24Mha of land being used for lettuce cultivation. This figure shows that lettuce cultivation is widespread worldwide, but it is notable that China’s production volume stands out. This characteristic is supported by China’s vast land area and diverse climatic conditions. Lettuce is also produced in other countries, and in some regions, technologies such as greenhouse cultivation and hydroponics are used. In the future, the promotion of sustainable agriculture and technological innovations may affect global land use for lettuce.

Lettuce land use (continent)
Looking at the land use data for lettuce in global agriculture in 2022, it is clear that Asia is the largest production region. Land use for lettuce in Asia as a whole has reached 907kha, which is the maximum value. This trend reflects the high population density and large demand for lettuce in the Asian region. In addition, there are widely different climatic conditions and cultivation methods in the Asian region, which provide an environment suitable for lettuce production. On the other hand, lettuce is also produced in other regions, but Asia has an overwhelming production volume. This trend is likely due to differences in climate and land use by region, as well as the relationship between market demand and supply. In the future, the promotion of sustainable agriculture and technological innovations may affect global lettuce production.

Lettuce land use (latest year, continental)
Looking at the land use data for lettuce in global agriculture in 2022, we can see that Asia is the largest production region. The total land use for lettuce is 1.24Mha, with Asia accounting for most of it at 907kha. This indicates that Asia is a region with high population density and large demand for lettuce. The average land use for lettuce is 207kha, which is affected by different climatic conditions and production techniques in different regions. Some regions have warm climates and abundant water sources, which allow for efficient lettuce cultivation, while in other regions, land and water constraints affect production. This data shows that while lettuce cultivation is widespread worldwide, Asia is at the center of it. In the future, it is expected that the promotion of sustainable agriculture and technological innovations will have a further impact on global lettuce production.
