Abstract
Land use for tomatoes has attracted global attention. According to the latest data for 2022, China is the largest tomato producer, covering an area of 1.14 million hectares. The trend so far has been that China is increasing agricultural production as its economy grows rapidly, and tomatoes are also produced on a large scale as part of this. In addition, major producing countries other than China include India, Turkey, the United States, and Egypt, and these countries are also focusing on tomato production. Globally, tomatoes are grown under diverse climatic conditions and are grown in a variety of regions, from warm to cold regions. In addition, tomatoes are widely consumed as processed and fresh products, and increasing demand is also leading to an expansion of land use. As such, tomato cultivation in countries around the world plays an important role in the local economy, and maintaining a balance between demand and production is a challenge.
Tomato land use (Worldwide)
Looking at the data on land use for tomatoes, there have been significant changes across the world between 1961 and 2022. It is noteworthy that China peaked at 1.14 Mha in 2022. This indicates that China’s agriculture has grown rapidly and a great deal of effort has been put into tomato production. Meanwhile, historical trends have shown that other major tomato producing countries have also grown. For example, countries such as India and Turkey have steadily grown in tomato cultivation area and yield. In addition, with technological innovation and agricultural modernization, we are seeing increased yields and more efficient planting area. In addition, changes in consumer demand are also having an impact, and tomato producing countries are responding to production volume and quality accordingly. Thus, land use for tomatoes reflects global trends, and production volume and rankings of producing countries can fluctuate due to changes in agricultural policies and markets.

Tomato land use (latest year, worldwide)
Land use for tomatoes plays an important role in global agriculture. According to data from 2022, the largest overall area is 1.14 Mha in China, the average is 29.3 kha, and the total area reaches 4.92 Mha. This shows that tomatoes are widely cultivated around the world. Many countries are involved in tomato production, and according to past trends, China, India, Turkey, the United States, Egypt, etc. are listed as major producing countries. Although the production volume and quality of these countries vary due to differences in climatic conditions and agricultural techniques, tomatoes are widely consumed around the world, so demand is stable. In addition, tomatoes are used for a variety of purposes as processed and fresh products, and occupy an important position not only in agricultural production but also in the entire food industry. Thus, land use for tomatoes contributes to the diversity and food security of global agriculture, and it is important to maintain a balance between demand and supply.

Tomato land use (continent)
The latest data on land use for tomatoes in 2022 shows that Asia accounts for the largest share of the total at 2.7 Mha. This differs from past trends and suggests that Asia is playing an increasingly important role in tomato production. Traditionally, tomato production has been mainly centered in Europe and North America, but production in the region is rapidly increasing due to economic growth in Asian countries and advances in agricultural technology. Countries such as China, India, and Turkey are attracting attention as major tomato producers, and these countries have large agricultural production bases and are expanding production to meet demand. The increase in tomato production in the Asian region is also linked to agricultural modernization and food security efforts in the region. In addition, tomatoes are in high demand as processed and fresh products, and the growing demand in the Asian market is also boosting tomato production. Thus, while the Asian region is becoming a global leader in land use for tomatoes, production in other regions still plays an important role.

Tomato land use (latest year, continental)
Land use data for tomatoes in 2022 shows that Asia recorded the largest overall area, reaching 2.69 Mha. This indicates that the Asian region plays a very important role in tomato cultivation. Tomato production in Asia has grown rapidly over the past few decades, thanks to advances in agricultural technology and the expansion of production bases. In particular, countries such as China, India, and Turkey have emerged as major tomato producers and have developed large-scale agricultural production. On the other hand, tomato cultivation is also thriving in other regions, with important production in Europe and North America. Tomatoes are widely in demand as processed and fresh products and are consumed worldwide, so expanding agricultural production is important to meet demand. In addition, tomatoes are grown all over the world because they can adapt to diverse climatic conditions. This results in diversity in production volume and quality from region to region, but a stable supply is maintained worldwide. Thus, land use for tomatoes is an important factor supporting the diversity and stability of global agriculture.
