Abstract
China has an overwhelming presence in mushroom production in global agriculture. China’s production in 2022 will be 45.4 Mt, which accounts for the majority of the world’s total production. China is blessed with favorable climatic conditions and soil, and there are many areas suitable for mushroom cultivation. In addition, mushrooms are deeply rooted in China’s food culture and demand is high, so production is expanding. Meanwhile, other countries are also focusing on mushroom cultivation, and high-quality mushrooms are produced in Europe, North America, Japan, and other places in particular. In these regions, efficient production is being carried out through technological innovation and improved cultivation methods. In addition, there has been a trend of increasing demand for mushrooms in recent years due to the growing health consciousness and the spread of vegetarian and vegan diets. In the future, it will be necessary to introduce sustainable cultivation methods and stabilize production.
Mushroom production (worldwide)
Global mushroom production has grown steadily over the past few decades. China, in particular, has seen a rapid rise in its production. China’s mushroom production has grown sustainably since 1961, reaching a record high of 45.4 Mt in 2022. This growth is likely due to technological innovation and agricultural modernization. As China’s population grows and urbanization progresses, food demand has increased, and mushroom demand is expected to follow suit. On the other hand, current production, which remains at 100% of its peak, suggests that supply is catching up with the increasing demand. This suggests that there is a need to improve production efficiency and promote sustainable agriculture. Other countries have also grown in mushroom production, but China’s influence in the global mushroom market is noteworthy. In the future, sustainable production and resource management will be key challenges to meet the growing demand.

Mushroom production (latest year, world)
China has an overwhelming presence in mushroom production in global agriculture. According to data for 2022, China’s mushroom production is 45.4Mt, equivalent to about 93.9% of the total, which is much higher than the production of other countries. China’s mushroom production has been growing steadily for many years and has followed its demand. On the other hand, the production of countries other than China is relatively small, and China’s influence is notable. The average country’s production is 711kt, totaling 48.3Mt, but China’s huge production significantly raises this figure. In countries other than China, mushroom production mainly responds to regional demand, and although the scale is smaller than that of China, high-quality mushrooms are produced. Based on past trends, China’s mushroom production has been steadily increasing and is expected to continue to expand in line with the growth in demand. However, the introduction of sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of resource management are also increasing, and these factors are expected to affect mushroom production in the future.

Mushroom production (continent)
Asia is the largest producer of agricultural mushrooms, with 46.4 Mt in 2022 data. This accounts for the majority of the world’s total production. In the Asian region, China and other countries are engaged in large-scale mushroom production, and production is increasing to meet the demand. Production in the Asian region, mainly in China, is supported by technological innovation and agricultural modernization. On the other hand, mushrooms are produced in other regions, but the production volume in the Asian region is overwhelming. High-quality mushrooms are also produced in regions such as Europe, North America, and Oceania, but the scale is relatively small and mainly responds to regional demand. The current value of mushroom production in the Asian region is the largest, which indicates the importance of agriculture in the region. In the future, changes in demand and the promotion of sustainable agriculture will affect mushroom production.

On the other hand, the overall average production of 9.67 Mt suggests that production in other regions is relatively small compared to the large-scale production in Asia. In the future, changes in demand and the promotion of sustainable agriculture will affect mushroom production.
