Total area to harvest green soybeans and production amount in Japan

Production (vegetables)

Abstract

Looking at data on fruit vegetables in Japanese agriculture, especially edamame, we can see that the harvest volume in 2022 will be a maximum of 65.2kt nationwide, the cultivated area will be 12.7kha, and Hokkaido will have the maximum shipping volume of 8.49kt. Considering the trends and characteristics that can be inferred from these figures, it is clear that edamame production throughout Japan is stable, with Hokkaido accounting for the majority of shipments. Hokkaido has suitable climate conditions and soil, making it potentially suitable for growing edamame. In addition, since the cultivated area is relatively large compared to the harvest volume, it is believed that production is efficient. However, relatively low production and shipment volumes in other regions suggest that regional differences exist. In the future, measures will be needed to improve productivity in each region, including Hokkaido, and to achieve balance between regions.

Edamame harvest yield (main data).

Looking at data on Japan’s edamame harvest from 1973 to 2022, the national harvest peaked in 1982, at 122kt. However, the trend thereafter has been downward, reaching 65.2 kt in 2022, roughly half of the peak. This decline is likely due to several factors. This may be due to the modernization of agriculture and urbanization, which has led to a decrease in farmland and a decrease in the agricultural labor force. Changing consumer eating habits and an increase in imported goods may also be contributing factors. Additionally, factors such as climate change and natural disasters may also be affecting yields. Going forward, efforts will be required to restore and stabilize edamame production volumes while taking into consideration agricultural sustainability and improving productivity.

Edamame harvest volume (by prefecture).

Looking at data for fruit vegetable harvests in Japan by prefecture for 2022, Hokkaido recorded the highest overall yield of 8.82kt, which is currently the highest value. Considering past trends, it appears that Hokkaido is a major region for fruit and vegetable production. Hokkaido has vast farmland and suitable climatic conditions, allowing many fruit and vegetable crops to be grown. On the other hand, it can be seen that the harvest yields in other prefectures are not that high. This may be due to differences in regional climatic conditions, soil conditions, and agricultural techniques. Additionally, demand and market trends vary between regions, which will also affect production volumes. In the future, measures will be needed to improve productivity in each region, including Hokkaido, and to achieve balance between regions.

Area cultivated with edamame (main data).

Looking at data from 1973 to 2022 on the area planted with edamame in Japan, the national planting area peaked in 1981 at 14.8 kha. However, the trend has been decreasing since then, and the current situation is at 85.8% of the peak. Several factors are contributing to this downward trend. First, due to recent changes in agricultural policy and economic trends, there has been a tendency for the area under cultivation to decrease. Additionally, the modernization of agriculture and urbanization may also be contributing to the decline in farmland and the agricultural labor force. Furthermore, conversion to other crops due to agricultural diversification and changing demand is also likely to have contributed to the decline in cultivated area. In the future, measures will be needed to maintain and restore the area cultivated with edamame and other crops, while taking into consideration the sustainability of agriculture and the revitalization of the local economy.

Edamame cultivation area (by prefecture).

Looking at the data for prefectures in 2022 regarding the area of land cultivated with fruit vegetables in Japan, Niigata recorded the largest overall cultivated area of 1.53 kha, which is currently the largest value. Considering the characteristics and trends so far, it appears that Niigata is a major region for fruit vegetable cultivation. Niigata has vast farmland and abundant water sources, and produces many fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, we can see that the cultivated area in other prefectures is not that large. This may be due to differences in regional climatic conditions, soil conditions, and agricultural techniques. Demand and market trends also differ between regions, which will also affect the area planted. In the future, measures will be required to improve productivity in each region, including Niigata, and to achieve balance between regions.

Edamame shipping volume.

In terms of edamame shipments in Japan in 2022, the largest overall volume was Hokkaido at 8.49kt, with an average of 1.11kt and a total of 52.2kt. Considering past trends, it is suggested that Hokkaido is the leading region in terms of edamame shipping volume. Hokkaido has vast farmland and suitable climatic conditions, allowing many agricultural products to be grown. On the other hand, shipping volumes from other regions are relatively low, indicating that Hokkaido has a large influence. Additionally, the average shipping volume of 1.11kt shows that there is variation from region to region. This may be due to differences in climate, soil conditions, and agricultural techniques in each region. Furthermore, the total shipment figure of 52.2kt suggests that demand for edamame remains at a steady level. In the future, it will be necessary to improve productivity in each region, including Hokkaido, and adjust production volumes to meet demand.
