Abstract
In 2022, the highest price for domestically produced lettuce reached 52.4 million yen, reflecting the high costs associated with local production. Meanwhile, asparagus imports totaled a maximum of 2.47 million yen, with imports accounting for 16% of total asparagus consumption. Historically, Japan has seen an increasing reliance on imported Western vegetables like asparagus, driven by factors such as climate limitations for domestic production and changing dietary preferences. However, high prices for domestic vegetables like lettuce highlight the challenges faced by the local agricultural sector in meeting demand.
Domestic price of Western vegetables
From 2004 to 2022, the price of domestically produced lettuce in Japan peaked at 95 million yen in 2015. As of the latest data, its price has decreased to 55.2% of that peak, reflecting a notable price reduction over the past several years. This trend can be attributed to improved production methods, more efficient supply chains, and a shift in consumer preferences towards more affordable vegetables. Despite fluctuations in prices due to factors like weather conditions, the long-term trend suggests a stabilization of lettuce prices, making it more accessible for consumers.

Import price of Western vegetables
In 2022, broccoli emerged as the highest-valued imported vegetable in Japan, with a total market price of 8.54 million yen, a figure that remains unchanged. This reflects a steady demand for broccoli, driven by its increasing popularity in Japanese cuisine and the country’s limited domestic production capabilities. Over the years, Japan has seen a rise in the importation of Western vegetables like broccoli, as consumer tastes have shifted towards healthier options. Despite fluctuations in the global market, the demand for imported vegetables like broccoli remains robust, indicating a stable trend.

Import (proportion) price of Western vegetables
From 2004 to 2022, the proportion of broccoli imports in Japan peaked at 30.5%, reflecting its popularity and demand for Western vegetables. However, the current import share is 4.92% lower than its peak, indicating a slight decline in the dependency on imported broccoli. This trend could be attributed to improved domestic production or shifts in consumer preferences toward other vegetables. Despite the decline, broccoli remains a staple in the Japanese market, with steady imports maintaining its position as a key vegetable in both domestic and international food trends.
