[Ukraine] Latest data and top charts on production volume of leafy stems and fruit vegetables

Ukraine

Abstract

Vegetable production in Ukraine is dominated by cabbage, which boasts the largest production volume at 1.53 Mt (million tonnes) in 2022. This trend has continued for many years and is due to the high demand for cabbage for both domestic consumption and export. Ukraine also has vast farmland, and the fertile black soil regions in particular provide an ideal environment for vegetable production. From the perspective of land use, cabbage and other leafy vegetables often occupy a large proportion of the land area. Tomato production is divided into two main categories: for eating raw and for processing. Production of tomatoes for fresh consumption has remained relatively stable, while processed tomatoes are an important supply source for the domestic food industry. The area under tomato cultivation is increasing year by year, and production is expected to increase, especially in response to demand from processors. Overall, Ukrainian vegetable production caters to both domestic and export markets and is strategically tailored to different crop uses. In particular, production of cabbage and tomatoes is stable, and exports are important economic factors along with domestic consumption.

Production (by vegetables)

A notable trend in vegetable production in Ukraine is the important position of cabbage production. In particular, cabbage production volume peaked at 2.08 Mt in 2013 and has been declining since then. Current cabbage production is about 73.6% of its peak, reflecting changes in Ukrainian agriculture. This decline may be due to improvements in agricultural production efficiency and crop diversification, as well as climate change. Looking back at data from 1992 to 2022, Ukrainian agriculture has consistently relied on cabbage production, which has been grown according to demand in the domestic and export markets. However, in recent years production of other crops has increased, with tomatoes and potatoes emerging as important crops. In addition, demand for processed tomatoes in particular is on the rise, and tomato production volume is steadily increasing. Thus, although vegetable production in Ukraine has shown some changes compared to past peaks, cabbage-centered crop production remains strong. As agriculture diversifies and adapts to the export market, future production trends should be closely monitored.

Yield(by vegetable)

Lettuce production in Ukraine showed significant fluctuations between 1992 and 2022. In particular, the peak was recorded in 2015 at 37.1t/ha. However, production volume has declined since then and is currently at 41.2% of its peak. Possible reasons for this decline include increased agricultural efficiency, crop diversification, and changing market needs. Lettuce requires relatively high management techniques for cultivation and is particularly sensitive to climate and soil conditions. Ukraine’s agriculture has depended on large-scale grain production, and the increase or decrease in cultivated area has been strongly influenced by economic factors and climatic conditions at the time. Another factor is that while lettuce production has decreased in recent years, production of other crops that are easy to grow and have stable demand, such as tomatoes and cabbage, has increased. In addition, changes in eating habits and diversifying consumer tastes in Ukraine are also having an impact. Due to the characteristics of lettuce, efficient production methods are required to overcome the difficulties of climate and cultivation management. Thus, lettuce production in Ukraine has decreased in recent years due to market and climatic fluctuations, but it still retains a certain importance in agricultural production.

Land use (by vegetables)

Data on land use for vegetable production in Ukraine in 2022 shows that cabbage occupies the largest area, reaching 59.3 kha (thousand hectares). This area is the largest among all land uses and indicates the importance of cabbage in Ukrainian vegetable production. Cabbage is in high demand for both domestic consumption and export, so vast areas of land are used for its cultivation. On the other hand, the total area under vegetable cultivation in Ukraine is 162 kha, with the average area being 20.2 kha. As these figures show, vegetable production in Ukraine is heavily concentrated in land allocation for certain crops, especially cabbage. With the exception of cabbage, other vegetables are often produced on relatively small areas, and there is a tendency for land use to vary by crop. This land use trend reflects the specific characteristics of Ukrainian agriculture. Cabbage is produced efficiently in areas with suitable climatic conditions, and land use is becoming more intensive. However, in recent years, due to the demand for diverse crops and improvements in production efficiency, the area cultivated with other vegetables is gradually increasing. In the future, further optimization of land use will be required in response to advances in agricultural technology and changes in the market.

Tomato usage

Tomato production in Ukraine reached a peak in 1992, reaching 2.44 Mt (million tonnes). During this period, tomatoes were widely used for both fresh consumption and processing, and played an important role in meeting domestic demand in Ukraine and for export. In terms of uses, there is a high demand for processed tomatoes, and the Ukrainian food industry also produces products using tomatoes (especially tomato paste and ketchup), which supports consumption both domestically and overseas. The year 1992 was the early period after Ukraine’s independence, and it was also a time of great change in the agricultural industry structure and market environment. Therefore, the peak in tomato production reflects the stability of the supply system against the demand in the domestic market, and producers have allocated a lot of land to tomato cultivation. This was also the time when, after Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union, agricultural productivity was improving and export markets were being developed. However, current tomato production has decreased compared to 1992, and the uses of tomatoes have also changed in recent years. This is particularly due to the decline in domestic consumption and the shift to other crops, and the production of tomatoes for processing is also decreasing. Nevertheless, tomatoes remain one of the important crops in Ukrainian agriculture and continue to be in constant demand. In the future, demand for tomatoes by use will become more diverse, requiring further efficiency in production.
